Cross Mountain Park is a 16 acre Community Park located off North Milam.  With an elevation of 1,951 feet, it has beautiful views, walking trails, and picnic areas.  In 2006, the City of Fredericksburg received memorial donations from the Cox Family for improvements at this park in honor of Joe Thorp Cox and his parents May Stein Cox and Tyrus T. Cox.   The Cross Mountain Nature Trail was previously dedicated to his mother in 1979.  Joe Cox was a sixth generation Gillespie County resident and grandson of Joe Stein, the first mayor of Fredericksburg.  Tyrus Cox was well known state-wide for his historic preservation projects and May Cox was a tireless community volunteer.

With this memorial donation and park dedication revenue, the City has installed benches, a visitors' restroom and later this fall a small Monarch Butterfly Garden will be added.  The official opening of this Rest Area is scheduled for September 11, 2017, at 10:00 am at the park at 1510 N. Milam.
